The only valid results from ERMI will indicate how well your housekeeping is done, but not what or how many mold spores are in your breathing zone.
Any it won’t give you any information of where the mold reservoir is located. Or how to fix it.
The Environmental Relative Moldiness Index was create by the EPA, who sent techs out into the low income housing projects to measure mold. The condition of the building was not considered and neither was the housekeeping: just the levels of mold spores in the dust that were found. ERMI testing required approximately 1 tbs. of dust. Now that dust behind your refrigerator may have been there for 10 years or maybe 1 week. There is just no way with ERMI to know.
We measure the levels of mold spores that are in the breathing zone and settled on your contents.
Here’s how another expert put it:
Dr. Harriett Burge, a co-founder of EMLab, gives this advice: To get valid results from ERMI testing have your entire house professionally deep cleaned. Wait 14 days. Then sample. We agree with Dr. Burge. Also, a deep clean of the building very well may solve multiple allergy related issues.
